The first step is to check is that the action on your guitar is set properly for you. A good guitar shop will do this for you but if you have purchased a new or used guitar the action may be too high and cause sore fingers and stress in your hands.

**Note - The ‘action’ is the distance between the underside of the guitar string and the guitar fingerboard. Not having this set properly can result in sore fingers and that will definitely result in less practice and playing.

The second step is to understand that the music is in you and no amount of spending on fancy equipment will overcome what you put in to it. Your effort should be put into technique not the latest equipment. You are the reason your playing works or it does not. A good guitar player can still create great music on inferior equipment. Great equipment can’t make a bad player sound good.

The third step is to concentrate on your rhythm. Keep the pace with your foot so that you have a consistent flow in your playing. Spend more time and effort in developing rhythm when playing as that is the most important item when people are listening. Once this becomes second nature then you can start to expand your other techniques.

The fourth step to learning guitar fast is to use simple chords first..If you are trying to master complex chords before you have the rhythm down to being an automatic reflex you will stop the rhythm because you are concentrating so hard on where to place your fingers that you lose the pace.

The fifth step is again to stay with basics in your strumming pattern. This will help you in two ways. You won’t lose the rhythm because you are using just a basic strum on the first beat of the measure. You also will begin to memorize the sound of the chord. This will allow you to easily start to play by ear down the line because you will recognize the chord automatically in the songs you are copying.

The final concept to learn to play guitar fast is to stick to two chord songs initially..Again by keeping it simple you build up your confidence and your abilities much more quickly. After all when you were an infant you crawled berfore you walked and you mastered walking before you could run.

A guitar pick is a small flat tool that you used to strum the guitar. You should purchase a minimum of ten guitar picks and they are relatively cheap.

There are different types of guitar picks but it is best to start with one that is not too hard or too flimsy. Picks are made of rubber, wood, stone, plastic, tortoiseshell, and metal and they are usually in the shape of a triangle (but other shapes are available from manufacturers).

Once you have a guitar pick and are seated in the proper position, you can begin strumming the guitar. Your picking hand will be nearest the bridge of your guitar. You should open up the hand you will be picking or “strumming” the guitar with. The palm should face you.

Then make sure the thumb is next to the index finger. Make sure that you rotate the hand so the knuckle of the thumb is facing toward you. With your free hand you should slide in the guitar pick between your index finger and thumb. That way, the pick is secure. The pick should end up behind the thumb’s knuckle.

You should hold the pick firmly and the pointed portion of the pick should be pointing away from your fist and should be sticking out about ½ inch. The hand you are strumming with should be over the sound hole if you are using an acoustic guitar or over the guitar body if you are using an electric guitar. Your strumming hand should be placed above the strings.

Your picking hand should not sit on the body or strings of the guitar. Using your wrist, not your arm, strum the lowest string downward. If the string rattles too much, do not use a lot of the pick surface or strum softer. Then pick the lowest string upwards.

Try this a few times. Try to lower the motion of your picking hand by doing a short pick downwards and a short pick upwards. Now repeat the process with the rest of the strings.

Remember that holding the pick might feel strange at first and you should concentrate on your picking hand when you begin practicing the guitar. Your downstrokes and your upstrokes should sound the same.

Frets are strips of metal that cut the guitar in sections from top to bottom. The combination of strings and frets form a grid.

This grid covers the guitar neck and if you put your finger in between two frets, this allows you to play a note. The higher you place your finger on the fret; the higher the sound of the note.

One way of reading sheet music, without actually having to read sheet music is through “TAB”, which assigns a numerical value to the locations on your fret, thus making it much easier to begin playing (especially if you have no clue at all how to read that sheet music;-).

In today’s lesson we’re going to talk about strings — all 6 of ‘em!

A normal guitar has six strings which are all different sizes and represent different notes.

The bottom string is usually the skinniest and has the highest sound. It is an E note and is also known as the first string.

The second string is a little thicker than the first string and is the B note.

The third string is B, the fourth string is D, the fifth string is A, and the final, sixth string is an E, just like the first string. This sixth string is the thickest string of the set, has the lowest sound, and is the one that is closest to you.

In fact, if your guitar is tuned correctly, the first string and the sixth string should give you the same note but in different pitches.

For some people, it’s a bit difficult to memorize the notes, so I recommend doing something like this:

Big
Easy

That way it’s simple to remember E,A,D,G,B,E:)

To play that guitar you must know that guitar… and there are 7 basic components:

1) Headstock - The headstock is located at the end of the guitar that is furthest from your body and its main function is to hold the guitar strings.

2) Tuners - Tuners, located in the headstock, allow you to change the pitch of your guitar strings

3) Nut - At the bottom of the headstock is the “nut”, a piece of material with grooves carved out. These grooves guide the strings to the tuners.

4) Neck - The guitar neck will be the focal point as you begin to learn how to play the instrument and your fretboard, where all the magic (and music) happens is located here.

5) Sound hole - This hole, located in an acoustic guitar, is designed to project the sound of the instrument. If you’re rockin an electric already — you likely won’t find one of these.

6) Body - Probably the most obvious of guitar components, the body is the largest of the components, and is generally what you will be using to hold up the guitar when playing.

7) Bridge - Guitar strings go from the pegs on the headstock and over the nut… then down the neck, over the body, over the sound hole or pickups, where they are ultimately anchored to the bridge.
